Having recently returned from Kenya we had the pleasure of hearing from Debbie McMillan about DKiK.
Rather than a formal presentation Debbie provided a personal insight into the formation, running and future of DKiK. She covered the fostering of her boys, the bureaucratic problems with trying to get permanent residency, the issuing of incorrect visas and the cost associated with the legal immigration process.
In a heartfelt discussion Deb explained what living in Kenya was really like, supporting children actually meant taking on the entire family's health, welfare and educational responsibilities.
Taking 2 steps forward but being repeatedly knocked back 3 steps and always feeling like it is an uphill battle - but everyone agreed when a call came from the audience "you are an angle Deb" the wonderful work that you do in Kenya has been extremely beneficial to so many children. Unfortunately, that dedication takes its toll and Deb admitted she is worn out, the struggle has taken all her energy, the system failures are so difficult to continue to fight against. Deb is happy to be home, still facing challenges with the boys settling into a new world but hoping for everything to work out in the end.
DKiK continues to support the education fees for students taken in by Deb and helping establish mini business opportunities to the older ones. The Club has been a supporter of DKiK for a number of years and individuals sponsor students as well - we presented Deb a ARAM Certificate, which she acknowledged as a wonderful concept to provide mosquito nets rather than a small gift.
President Peter took the opportunity to advise Ded that DKiK was successful in receiving a $4000 grant from the 2026 RCAF program.
We wished Deb all the best and hope to see a lot more of her in the future now that she is back in Albury.
